So, I’m applying for this amazing job at Penguin. One of their suggested application formats is a Tumblr blog, and that’s what I’m doing. Because I have access to this fandom, I’d like to show Penguin that I know how to harness the power of people in promoting and spreading the word about books, and I’ve chosen to use Chris Colfer’s The Land of Stories as an example blog.
Guys, I need your help.
One of the most important things that publishers and authors are not generally doing right now is communicating with and involving their fans. Reading books has changed—with the increasing prevalence of fanworks, people want to be actively involved in showing their love and appreciation. One of the major reasons that Chris’ book debuted at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List was because he had such a widespread, established fanbase and he continuously makes the effort to connect with fans via Twitter, livestreams, and his book tour.
Take John Green as another example. Not only does he write amazing books that a lot of people read and enjoy, he provides free content on his website/blog. Furthermore, he has created an entire online community in the form of Nerdfighters, and has given them an identity. It’s so important these days for authors to be accessible, and obviously John Green’s approach will not work for every author—there is no one blanket approach; it must be done on an author-by-author basis.
What I’m aiming to do is put together a crowd-sourced project to show them real proof that I know how to motivate a group of people into getting involved in spreading the word. I need your help with three things:
I have to get my pack together by the 18th latest, ready to send to Penguin on the 19th. Which means I have eight days to do this. How amazing would it be to say in my covering letter, “Look at what I did in just eight days, just by identifying where the readers are and involving them in the process of spreading the word. Imagine what I could do for you given a month or more.”
Even if you have nothing to provide in the form of content, you can still help by reblogging this post and spreading the word. This is my dream job, and while I’m absolutely scared shitless (because this is HUGE), I can’t not go for it.
